Points to cover on the 1st day of your placement

If you don’t already have an appointment, ask to meet with your advisor / contact / manager at the company on the first day of your placement. This is the person responsible for giving you all the pertinent information about your work placement. Feel free to ask him/her any questions that you may find necessary so that you can be effective at the company and fit in well with your team. The more general (or non-existent) your agreement, the more questions you will need to ask on your first day. Make sure everything is clear and precise with no room for ambiguity. This is key to a successful work placement.

- What you need to do during your placement and your programme of work

- What are the company’s internal rules? You will need to follow them

- Who will your supervisor be?

- Do you need to be punctual? What are your weekday and weekend hours?

- What are your working conditions (office, computer, company car, parking place, etc.) and what equipment will be made available to you?

- How many hours will your supervisor spend with you and how many hours will you be working (if not indicated in your placement agreement)?

- What rules do you need to follow to terminate your placement?

- What are the security measures, precautions to take and risks?

- You must report any health problems that it would be good for the company to know

- What about leaves of absence?

- What are the dos and don’ts? What to do, what not to do and what is prohibited (can you negotiate your working conditions or hours, can you spit, etc.)

- How should you address your manager / your co-workers?
