What should you do when you arrive in France?

Day 1


  • Check the routes and times for your transit to your accommodation and plan alternatives in case of a delayed aeroplane, train, bus, etc.
  • Bring a telephone that works in France in case of emergency or a transport issue
  • Bring the numbers for your contacts, your housing and your establishment in France
  • Don’t hesitate to talk to the French people travelling alongside you. It’s a great opportunity to meet people and learn more about your host city



  • Withdraw cash: there will be bank machines at the airport or train station where you arrive
  • Buy your tickets (for Paris and/or the rest of France): you can buy train and bus tickets from automated terminals in multiple languages using a bank card
  • Collect any train tickets purchased in advance when you get to the airport (SNCF terminal) or at your departure station
  • Follow your prepared itinerary 




  • Buy some metro or bus tickets
  • Follow your prepared itinerary (cf. “At least 1 week before” sheet)
  • Go to your accommodation (permanent or temporary)
  • Identify the route to your establishment. Contact the establishment to organize your arrival (enrolment, student ID, insurance, Social Security, etc.) and plan your route
  • Go for a coffee in a neighbourhood café
  • Take a walk in the city
